Komyozenji temple
Tucked in quietly right behind the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is Komyozenji Temple, also known as Kokedera ("moss temple"). Its main attraction is its beautiful rock gardens, which are more than worth a look. The front garden is a bukko sekitei (Buddha rock garden) with rocks arranged into the Chinese character for “light.” The rear garden uses green moss to represent land and white sand to represent sea and is called Itteki Kaitei, meaning that even the vast ocean started from a single drop of water. The year-round beauty here will soothe your heart, whether it’s the fresh greenery at the beginning of summer or the colorful autumn leaves.
