Seasonal food and classics! This area is located from central Fukuoka city to the north. Great photo opportunities, starting with Munakata Taisha, which is now a world heritage site, and inclu- ding other spots and foods.

01 Munakata Taisha
Rising fortunes at a new power spot (Munakata-shi)

Over 1 million people per year have visited since it was registered as a world cultural heritage site in July 2017. In the sacred treasure building, there is an exhibition of 80,000 excavated national treasures. The first traffic safety paper sting charm in Japan is a must-see.

One of Japan’s oldest shrines, the Munakata shrine is the head shrine of about 6,200 shrines. Visit the three Munakata shrines:Hetsumiya Shrine, the second shrine, and the third shrine
The second shrine of Okitsumiya and the third shrine of Nakatsumiya deify Bunrei (pictured on the left). They are both made in the ancient Japanese “yuiitsu shinmei-zukuri” style
There is an arched bridge in front of the main shrine over a lake shaped like the character meaning “heart” in Japanese. There are many Koi in the pond. Many people feed them from the 14 m long bridge

ACCESS FROM TENJIN
[Car] Get on the Fukuoka Highway Tenjinkita ramp then get off at Kashii Higashi. Take natio- nal route 3 toward Munakata, then continue on prefectural route 97/529/69. About 55 minutes
[Train] Approx. 6 minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station to JR Hakata Station on the subway. Get off the Moji Port bound train at JR Togo Station. Change to the bus bound for Konominato Hatoba, and after 12 minutes, get off at the Munakata Taisha-mae stop. It will be right there.
[Bus] Approx. 62 minutes from the Nishitetsu Bus stop 0Tenjin/Nichigin-mae on the ‘Munakata-Go.’ It will be right there once you get off at 0Munakata Taisha-mae

02 Shinbaru/Nuyama Mounded Tomb Group
Take a deep breath and experience history (Fukutsu-shi)

The Munakatas, an ancient powerful family conducted the Okinoshima ritual in the 5th/6th century in this tomb cluster. There are 5 graves with round shapes and flat fronts, 35 round graves, and 1 flat-topped grave, for a total of 41 remaining. There is a lookout where you can see the whole area from one place. The walking course around the ancient tomb group is 2 km long.

22 burial mounds. This group of burial mounds is home to the largest 80 m “keyhole- shaped” tumulus. Clay figures stand atop the burial mounds

ACCESS FROM TENJIN
[Car] Get on the Fukuoka Highway Tenjinkita ramp then get off at Kashii Higashi. Take national route 3/495 toward Fukutsu. About 55 minutes
[Train] Approx. 6 minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station to JR Hakata Station on the subway. Get off the Moji Port bound train at JR Fukuma Station. Change to the bus bound for Nishitetsu Togo Station, ride for approx. 25 minutes, then get off at 0Nuyamaguchi and walk for approx. 15 minutes. You may also take the Fukutsu Mini Bus and get off at 0Showa Gakuen-mae, which will drop you off right at the destination (not available on Sunday or holidays)

03 Eikichi Bakery
Be amazed at the extreme meatiness! (Koga-shi)

A bakery that also sells meat. Bread with meaty voluminous chicken, beef, and pork is this place’s strength. There are over 50 varieties of things that are mainly sandwiches, hot dogs, and hamburgers to choose from.

Pork belly habanero salsa dog. The original super spicy sauce goes perfectly with pork belly. A must-try for lovers of all things spicy.
A collection of substantial breads. They are made using hard batter so that the taste of the ingredients does not penetrate.
Aim to come at 12PM for the freshly baked bread. You can also dine in; there are drinks as well.

ACCESS FROM TENJIN
[Car] Get on the Fukuoka Highway Tenjinkita ramp then get off at Kashii Higashi. Take national route 3/495 toward Koga. Takes about 30 minutes.
[Train] Approx. 6 minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station to JR Hakata Station on the subway Take the subway bound for Moji Port and get off at JR Koga Station, then it is approx. 7 minutes on foot.
[Bus] Approx. 43 minutes taking the bus bound for Hanami from the Nishitetsu Bus stop 0Tenjin Chuo Yubinkyoku-mae (platform 18A). Get off at 0Nakagawa, and you’ll be right there

04 Ainoshima
Be welcomed by a lot of cats (Shingu-machi)

This small island with a circumference of about 6 km is accessible in 17 minutes by ferry. It is also popular as a sea fishing spot, but it has come to be known as “Cat Island” due to the cats that can be seen all around. You can also check out the Ainoshima stone burial mound group and the beautiful view of Hanagurise.

Cats who do not mind the presence of people live freely here. Their behavior is cute, often sprawling out near fishermen, or frolicking in the waiting area
The Ainoshima tomb cluster is on Nagaihama beach on the island’s northeast. The burial mounds / tumuli made of rocks are spread out over 500m
A spot that has been immortalized in the Manyoshu and collections of ancient and modern Japanese poetry. Get there by ferry from Shingu Port

[Car] Get on the Fukuoka Highway Tenjinkita ramp then get off at Kashii. Take Wajiro Dori toward Shingu About 30 minutes
[Train] Approx. 50 minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station to Nishitetsu Shingu Station. Approx. 12 minutes to Shingu Port on the “Marinkusu” community bus. Approx. 17 minutes to Ainoshima by the Shingu-run ferry, the “Shingu,” from the Shingu Ferry boarding area

05 Cococina
Trendy cooking makes for lively conversation (Hisayama-machi)

You can also have chewy fresh pasty with special sauce, hand-made Hamburg steaks, and original Western-style foods. The lunch buffet is all-you-can-eat for 90 minutes, and it receives rave reviews from fellow mothers and girls’ gatherings alike.

The wagyu beef shank stew has roughly 200g of volume. The all-you-can-eat set including drinks, salads, and soups.

[Bus] It takes approx. 54 minutes from Nishitetsu Bus 0Tenjin Chuo Yubinkyoku-mae (28B) to Sasaguri Station. After getting off at the 0Hisayama stop, you will be right there.
