teamLab: Light Festival in Fukuoka Castle Ruins2017.12.01 〜 2018.01.28 Ohori/Ropponmatsu Area
teamLab transforms Fukuoka Castle Ruins into a digital art space of interactive light.
Built over a period of seven years from 1601, Fukuoka Castle is the largest castle in Kyushu. Often referred to as the Stone Castle, its center such as Honmaru, Ninomaru and Sannomaru palaces was made up entirely of stone walls. Beautiful four layers of stone walls make this vast site a magnificent national historic treasure.
In the teamLab: Light Festival in Fukuoka Castle Ruins exhibition, the heart of Fukuoka Castle ruins with beautiful stone walls that span 20,000 square meters will be transformed into a digital art space of interactive light that changes according to the presence of people.
This exhibition is a part of teamLab’s art project called “Digitized Nature, Digitized City”. The concept of the project is that non-material digital art can turn nature and city into art without destroying nature or changing functions of the city.
teamLab (f. 2001) is art collective, an interdisciplinary group of ultratechnologists whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, design and the natural world. Various specialists such as artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects form teamLab.
teamLab aims to explore a new relationship between humans and nature through art. Digital technology has allowed us to liberate art from the physical and transcend boundaries. We see no boundary between ourselves and nature; one is in the other and the other in one. Everything exists in a long, fragile yet miraculous continuity of life.
