Setsubun Yakuyoke Prayer Ceremony [Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine]

Fukuoka City Neighborhoods

At Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine, Setsubun Yakuyoke Prayer Festival will be held on the day of Setsubun, February 3 (Sun), 2019. The shrine will be crowded during the period with many people who pray for protecting themselves against evils for the year.

On the day of Setsubun, “bean-throwing rituals” for warding off evils and bringing in fortune will be held at Tenjin Hiroba.

There’s a tradition at Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine that if you drink “sake in a gourd” under the plum tree of Tenjin-sama’s great affection, you’ll be able to avoid misfortune in mysterious ways. Only during the period, the sake will be served under the sacred plum tree, “flying plum”, for people who have received a Yakuyoke prayer (paid).

“Fuku-uchiwa” that ward off evils and bring in fortune and “Setsubun Fuku-mame” used for bean-throwing rituals will be sold for a limited time only.
