Shin-en Flower Garden of Hakozakigu Shrine “Winter Peony Public Viewing” Until Thursday, February 28 [Hakozakigu Shrine]

East Area

From January 1 (Tue/hol) to February 28 (Thu), 2019, “Winter Peony Public Viewing” is held in Shin-en flower garden along the side of the pathway to Hakozakigu Shrine where various kinds of flowers can be enjoyed all year round.

In this dry landscape style Japanese garden, 200 winter peonies in 20 different kinds bloom in profusion.

Let us suggest that you visit and enjoy them after praying at the shrine.

The garden was opened in April, 1987 in commemoration of the opening of “Hakozaki Miya-mae Station” of the City Subway Line 2, as well as marking 400 years since the great tea ceremony held at Hakozakigu Shrine by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587.

This is an authentic circuit style Japanese garden where seasonal flowers and dry landscape style Japanese garden created by a combination of pine trees, mosses, and rocks from Kyoto can be enjoyed.

The garden is very popular among locals of Fukuoka/Hakata as a shrine grove showcases the seasons and the seasonal flowers can be enjoyed, including ”spring peony” and “Chinese peony” in the early spring, “hydrangea” and “lily” in early summer, “Japanese maple” in fall, and “winter peony” in winter.
