“Harunobu Suzuki”, the Collection of Ukiyo-e from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston [Fukuoka City Museum]

Momochi , Sawara Area

The world’s finest collection that belongs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston!
Harunobu’s color that captured the world. The history of glamorous Ukiyo-e started from here!

As Harunobu Suzuki was active in creation for the brief period of 10 years and most of his works reside outside Japan, he is one of the most difficult artists to see the work in Japan. However, he was a founder of the colored woodblock print, an accomplished artist of fine portraying beautiful women, and an innovator who changed the world of Ukiyo-e.

The 150 brilliant pieces of the Bigelow’s collection which have been preserved carefully at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and their original colors have remained miraculously as they were. This exhibition features the pieces’ homecoming for the first time in 130 years.

What amazing things about the collection are:

★His pieces are way too rare!

The survived pieces of Harunobu’s works made during the incipient period of colored woodblock print is very few in number, and his valuable piece recognized only one in the world will also be exhibited.

★The color is ever so beautiful!

The beauty of the work of Harunobu can be appreciated in the exhibition precisely because the Ukiyo-e collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is notable for its well-preserved state. Most of his works have little degradation of quality because they had been stashed away without being exhibited. It can be said that it’s miracle that the color of Ukiyo-e of this era has remained in good condition this far.

★Only now! The last time in Fukuoka!

For the prevention purpose, the collection won’t be exhibited for several years after this one, not even at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
