Here’s a guide on how to enjoy the 58th Hakata Dontaku Port Festival! [In Fukuoka City][Meiji-dori Avenue/ Various places in the city]

~ Congratulations!! The first year of Reiwa and 840 years of Hakata Matsubayashi’s history ~

During the Golden Week Holiday in Fukuoka City, on May 3 (Fri/Holiday) and 4 (Sat/Holiday), the Fukuoka citizen’s festival, Hakata Dontaku Port Festival which brings over two million spectators, will take place.

During the festival, there will be a lot of events including parades at Dontaku Hiroba (on Meiji-dori Ave.) and performances at around 30 stages within the city.

For a more comfortable and better viewing spot of Dontaku Troupe’s parade, Kanko Sajiki tickets for special seats on the stands are now on sale!

Here’s how to enjoy Hakata Dontaku!

Highlight [1]: Parades at Dontaku Hiroba

The important intangible folk culture asset, “Matsubayashi” will mark the start of Dontaku Parade

Then, groups and individuals of Dontaku Troupe, who dance freely while showcasing their unique costumes and talents, will parade through the 1270-meter Dontaku Hiroba on Meiji-dori Ave. (between Gofukumachi intersection and Tenjin).

For the finale, on the 4th, spectators are invited to participate in the So Odori communal dance. With Shamoji spoon in your hands, jump in and join!

Around 30 stages are set up across the city places such as Hakata Station, Tenjin, and Canal City Hakata. Each hosts a wide variety of celebrating performances of groups such as Dontaku Troupe and other entertainers!

Highlight [3]: Hakata Matsubayashi

“Hakata Matsubayashi”, the important intangible folk culture asset is the origin of Hakata Dontaku. The procession of three gods of fortune, Fukujin, Ebisu and Daikoku accompanied by a group of children make a courtesy visit to local facilities and companies.

Highlight [4]: Nishitetsu Flower Cars

The much-loved Nishitetsu Flower Cars cruise through the city this year, too!
Vibrantly decorated with LED lights and artificial flowers, 4 large trucks in popular local sports and characters themes will cruise through major roads in the city.

At Dontaku Hiroba, the flower cars also join in to the parade, and on May 5 (Sun/Holiday), they will be displayed in Kashii Kaen.

Highlight [5]: Kanko Sajiki Seat (fee required)

You can see the bustling Dontaku parade from seats with good viewing on the stand. The tickets are now on sale, and come with a free “Shamoji marked with a stamp of Dontaku.”

As the tickets are valid throughout the day of issue, take your time and enjoy yourself.

Brochures and leaflets are given out and inquiries are received at Dontaku Information Center, and Dontaku original goods are sold at the special information center. (Sold only at the special information center in Hakata Station and Suijo Park) They will be very good souvenirs.
