Kyushu tournament began in 1957, upgraded as a formal tournament from an exhibition tour. While it used to be held in the old Sports Center (the present Solaria Plaza), it was relocated to Kyuden Memorial Gymnastic Hall in 1974, and since 1981 has been held in Fukuoka Kokusai Center. Many of “jungyo beya” (bases for wrestlers to stay and practice) are set up around the city during the tournament and a lot of people visit them trying to catch a glimpse of sumo wrestlers.
